What Is Standard Filter Press

A standard filter press is one of the oldest and most trusted pieces of dewatering equipment. It's used for wastewater treatment across a variety of industries and applications. A standard filter press works by separating out solids from liquids, removing impurities, and suspended solids from industrial wastewater.

How Does a Standard Filter Press Work

During the fill cycle, the slurry pumps into the standard filter press and distributes evenly during the fill cycle. Solids build up on the filter cloth, forming the filter cake in the void volume of the plate. The filtrate, or clean water, exits the filter plates through the ports and discharges clean water out the side of the plates.

Standard filter presses are a pressure filtration method. As the standard filter press feed pump builds pressure, the solids build within the chambers until they are completely full of solids. This forms the cake. The filter cakes release when the plates are full, and the cycle is complete. Also, many higher capacity standard filter presses use fast action automatic plate shifters which speeding cycle time.

What Is the Feed Pressure for a Standard Filter Press

The incoming solution enters into the standard filter press via a diaphragm pump that is plumbed to the center feed pipe. When the plates are closed, the sludge accumulates in the cavity between the plates.

The filtered water exits through the filter cloth and works its way through the stack alternating between the left upper and lower corners and right upper and lower corners, due to the porting differences on the on button and three button plates.

Before the operator can begin filling the standard filter press, it should be confirmed that the plates are in the button alignment. (This alignment is critical in the air blow-down process.) The unit then needs to be completely closed and all valves should be in the appropriate position. This is accomplished by pushing all them in place by extending the hydraulic cylinder and attaining the recommended PSI.

As the standard filter press fills, it is recommended to begin the feed at 25 PSI and to gradually ramp up the pressure at steady intervals to the maximum pressure of 100 PSI. Upon initial filling of the standard filter press, the pump will thrust at quick intervals. Conversely, as the press fills, the diaphragm pump will slow down significantly. The easiest way to tell that the press is full is, to listen to the diaphragm pump once it hits 100 PSI. It will dramatically reduce to 30 seconds to 1-minute intervals between thrusts or it may deadhead (stop) altogether. This is your indicator that the cycle is complete. Cycle time can vary from as little as 30 minutes to over 4 hours depending upon what is being filtered. When the standard filter press is full, all of the chambers will be filled with sludge.

Once the press is full, it is time to operate the Air Blowdown. When the three ball valves on the outlet manifold are closed, and the inlet center feed ball valve is closed, the air that enters the standard filter press via the small ball valve on the upper left-hand corner of the manifold is forced through the standard filter press.

In the installation of standard filter press, it's required to check whether the concrete foundation is level and solid or not in advance . To facilitate the discharging operation, the footpath must be kept unobstructed, with a passageway about 1m in width around the standard filter press. The frame must be aligned with respect to the level and diagonals, and the tail plate outrigger must be anchored with the ground bolt. The cylinder outriggers require no anchoring, but shall be in smooth contact with the ground to ensure a certain free displacement when being loaded.

Check whether various bolts of the standard filter press frame are fastened, whether filter plates are arranged in order, and whether holes are aligned. In the case of open flow standard filter press, the liquid nozzle must be fitted at lower end of filter plate and be fastened. If the user requests the use of liquid receiving disk or turning plate, the base of the whole machine shall be higher than the foundation level by a certain volume to reserve a space for installation of liquid receiving disk or turning plate.

Filter plates must be arranged on the frame in order without any inclination to avoid influencing the normal operation of the standard filter press. The filtration fabric must be kept clean without folding, otherwise leakage may occur. Bolts of the cloth clamper, if any, must be tightened evenly, to press the filtration fabric against the charging inlet; otherwise the filter pulp may enter into the space between filtration fabric and filter plate to influence the normal operation of the standard filter press.

The mounting position of hydraulic station can be determined according to the actual conditions of the user (for part of models, the electric control box has been fitted on the frame), and the pipeline must be as short as possible, but no less than 1.5m. The hydraulic station shall be far away from the discharging place to avoid falling of materials onto the hydraulic station to influence the normal operation of hydraulic elements or the motor.

In case of corrosive gas user, the electric control cabinet shall be fitted in the operating room isolated from the corrosive gas to avoid damaging electric elements and influencing the normal operation (for other users, the installation can be performed as required), after it is confirmed that the power and motor are correctly wired, switch on the power supply, and check the electric control cabinet again.

Benefits of Using a Standard Filter Press

Efficient dewatering

A standard filter press is highly effective in reducing the moisture content of sludge, which lowers transportation and disposal costs.

Space-saving

By reducing the volume of sludge, a standard filter press helps in minimizing the space needed for sludge storage and handling.

Improved handling

The dewatered filter cake is easier to handle and less likely to cause issues like odors or leachate during transportation and disposal.

Reusability

The filtrate can often be reused in the treatment process, improving the overall efficiency.

What Is the Efficiency of a Standard Filter Press

The standard filter press is an installation in which the product to be filtered is pressed in filter chambers between vertically hanging filter plates each covered with a filter cloth. Depending on the desired outcome a chamber standard filter press or a membrane standard filter press is used.

Standard filter presses achieve the highest separation efficiency of all mechanical separation techniques, by pressing the sludge in closed chambers . For this, the finest filter fibers may be used to guarantee an optimal product separation. It is, therefore, the preferred technique for industries focusing on the maximum purity of the filtrate, or the lowest residual moisture in the cake .

Both the extraction of the solid matter (the "filter cake") as well as the purification of the original product may be important. The liquid content or water content in the filter cake depends on the physical and chemical properties of the suspension as well as on the final pressure of the feed pump at the end of the filtration cycle .

How to Choose a Standard Filter Press

Plate Size
Once the cubic foot capacity of a standard filter press has been determined the next step is, the proper selection of the size of the filter plates, frame, components and any accessories. This will allow you to see exactly where the cu. Ft. Capacity fits in relation to the volume of each size press. After the plate size is selected, there are many options from which to choose.

Plate Construction
Select the type of filter plate material. The standard material is an industrial grade polypropylene. An optional FDA approved food grade polypropylene material, or a high temperature glass filled polypropylene material are also available. Special materials are also available such as carbon steel , stainless steel.

Plate Style
Also available are non-gasketed plates with quick removal latex edged cloths, where the cloth acts as the gasket. The non gasketed plates allow for easier change out of the filter cloth, are lower in cost, but are not completely liquid tight during the processing stage. Special membrane squeeze plates have the ability to expand after the chambers are full to "squeeze" additional process liquid out of the filter cake. A "mixed stack" of plates will be provided where every other plate will be a special membrane squeeze plate.

Optional Backing Plate
If a shorter cycle is desired, when running low volume applications for example, the capacity of the standard filter press can be temporarily reduced. This is done by moving the follower (tail) plate forward in the plate stack. The backing or "blank plate" is then placed behind the follower plate acting as extra support. The follower plate will not flex or break when used in this manner.

Plate And Press Pressure Rating
The 100 psi design is standard for most dewatering applications and will produce a cake with approximately 30-35% solids. A 225 psi design can be used to provide an increased yield per cycle and depending on the application can increase the solids in the cake to 50% or more.

Cake Thickness
The 32 mm cake thickness is standard. Options include 25, 38 and 50 mm cake thickness. 25 mm would be used for high viscosity (slimy) materials and 50 mm would be used for easily filtered material.

Cloth Type
Can provide filter cloths in many different materials, weaves, thread styles, and air permeability values resulting in a wide array of performance characteristics.

Frame Design
All frame configurations are sidebar design. Frames can be designed in carbon steel or stainless steel.

Volume Of Plates/expansion Spacer
All standard filter presses are available with optional removable expansion spacer. On presses ordered with a spacer, the first number denotes current plate capacity. The second number in the nomenclature is the maximum capacity the frame will allow.

Discharge/air Blow-down Piping
The discharge/air blow-down piping is available in either manual or in automatic operation. An optional core blow-down is available to purge the center feed line of residual fluid.

Feed Style
The feed style can vary for special applications such as pharmaceuticals and some type of food processing. Center feed is standard, however a choice of any corner feed is available.

Automation Versus Manual Operation
Manual or semi automatic operation requires input from an operator to start and operation of the standard filter press, including opening and closing, blow down, plate shifting etc. Fully automated presses require initial start up of operation and then close fill, blow-down, plate shift, discharge and cloth wash is automated. Restarting the press cycle still requires operator input.
